The German Shepherd dog, also known as the Alsatian, is a large breed dog that originated in, not surprisingly, Germany. During the 1800s, dogs were bred to preserve traits that assisted them in their sheep herding duties and in protecting flocks from predators. The end result was the German Shepherd breed, the creation of which is attributed to Max von Stephanitz.
